International Youth Day at BIST

On August 12, students of BIST, including new students who had successfully passed their entrance exams, celebrated International Youth Day. Established by the United Nations at the end of 1999, it was first celebrated in 2000 and has been held annually ever since. The purpose of this holiday is to remind us of the role young people play in development and peacebuilding, as well as the everyday challenges they face.

The event began with a speech by Tanzilya Altafovna Nigmatullina, the director of the university. She congratulated everyone present on the occasion, highlighting the great creative potential of young people, their activity, and their willingness to contribute to the development of society. She also touched upon the history of the holiday, explaining that a long process of strengthening the role of youth in the modern world preceded its establishment. Back in 1965, the Assembly adopted a resolution calling for the promotion of ideals of peace, mutual respect, and understanding among nations among young people. It was on peace and youth participation in its formation that the Assembly focused in subsequent years. In 1979, this culminated in the declaration of 1985 as the International Year of Youth. By then, the Assembly had adopted a World Programme of Action, which established the foundations of policy and principles of action of individual states to improve the lives of young people.

The next International Year of Youth was declared in 2010. In addition, in 2015, the UN Security Council stated that young people play a key role in maintaining peace and peacebuilding, contributing to peace and security.

Students learned a lot: every year, organizers establish different slogans for International Youth Day: «Youth and Climate Change: Time for Action», «Fighting Poverty Together: Youth and Poverty Eradication», «Youth Migration: Progress on the Path to Development», «Youth in a Society Based on Intergenerational Interaction», and others. This year, International Youth Day is celebrated under the slogan «The Digital Path of Youth to Sustainable Development». Why this particular slogan? It’s because digitalization is changing the modern world, offering unprecedented opportunities to accelerate development, and young people are leading the way in embracing new technologies.

In conclusion, Tanzilya Altafovna answered numerous questions from students and wished them success in achieving their goals.
